Sitecore 8 is the main website of The NBS, sister company to RIBA Enterprises Ltd. The website has three purposes: promote and drive sales of our software and services, provide software support, and provide a comprehensive knowledgebase of articles on subjects relating to the AEC industries. This version of the site was launched in early 2016, built on .NET MVC5 and Sitecore 8.0.

Much of the initial development of the site was outsourced while provision was made for myself and my manager to get Sitecore Certified. Once I gained my certification my early work on the site was on completing minor features and fixing issues before launch.

Since we launched the site I have been working on a series of new features and improvements both to the Sitecore back-end and to the end user experience. Since May 2016 I have been the lead developer on the project, planning our direction and priorities as well as managing our Agile processes.

While the initial version of the site was more than serviceable, there were undoubtedly rough edges. Much of my work since May has focused on implementing improvements to design and layout across the site to improve user engagement. Some examples would be our new product, case study and article pages.

The construction of these new pages has been particularly enjoyable as they have provided me the opportunity to dig into Sitecore and come up with for creative solutions for how non-technical users of the CMS can create engaging and dynamic content such as carousels and parallax image effects.

As project lead I have also been mentoring one of our graduate developers who works on this project as well. This has enabled me to begin a comprehensive review and refactor of the front-end of the site. Recently this has involved separating our very overcrowded CSS files into smaller and more maintainable SASS files.

Moving forward I am trying to get more involved in the design and UX decisions on the site as I try to position myself as our company’s only dedicated front-end developer.
